Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On 7 May 2009, Ministry of Public works And Transport of Kingdom of Cambodia and China Railway Group Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding to conduct a feasibility study on the project. China Railway No.8 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (CREC8) began the study in July 2009 and it was completed in 2011 at a cost of 3 million US dollars. The study found that the total cost of the proposed project to be US$686 million. The 257-km railway will start in Kampong Speu Province's Oudong District, pass by Kratie Province's Snuol District and end at Vietnam's Loc Ninh District in the southern border province of Binh Phuoc. It is estimated to take 30 months to complete. In 2015, Minister of Public Works and Transport (Cambodia) Tram Iv Tekand was still reviewing the technical specifications and recommendations of the study by China’s railway ministry but plans to ask for support from the Chinese government to fund the project.

Staff comments

Under a scheme announced in 2008 to develop an intra-Asian railway, China purportedly offered to contribute $500 million to build the Cambodia-Vietnam stretch of the railway (Batdeng-Loc Ninh railway line). No evidence of further development for this project has been found.
