Description
On August 21, 2009, the Chinese Government and the Government of Burundi signed an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA), which provided an RMB 50 million interest-free loan for a Presidential Palace Expansion Project (see Project ID#57118) and other projects to be determined by the two governments. The loan carried the following terms: 20-year maturity, 10-year grace period, and 0% interest. Under the terms of the ETCA, the loan was to be repaid over a period of ten years beginning in September 2019. In 2008, China planned to build a presidential palace in Gasenyi (north of Bujumbura). In November 2010, the Burundi government and Chinese Ambassador to Burundi Yu Xuzhong signed an agreement on the China-funded construction of the presidential palace in Gasenyi. The building is located 8 km northeast of Bujumbura's city center.
