Description

On January 16, 2003, China’s Ministry of Commerce and the Government of Mauritius signed an RMB 19,600,000 loan agreement. This loan carried the following terms: 0% interest rate, a 20 year maturity, and a 10 year grace period. It is repayable via annual installments between February 2013 and February 2023. The proceeds from this loan were earmarked to support two different projects: a Container Inspection Equipment Project and a CCTV Street Surveillance System and Island-Wide Digital Radio Communication System Project. The Container Inspection Equipment Project, which was also supported by another RMB 20 million loan (see #20080), involved the provision of container inspection equipment to the customs authorities in Mauritius for use at an airport and seaport. It was officially completed and handed over the local authorities in April 2006. The CCTV Street Surveillance System and Island-Wide Digital Radio Communication System Project, which was supported by 3 additional Chinese Government loans (see #1163, #72965, and #72993), involved the installation of 340 CCTV cameras in the Port Louis and Grand Baie areas, and the installation of an island-wide digital radio communications. It was completed on October 21, 2011.
