Project narrative

On October 10, 2014, the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, Huang Huaguang, and the Prime Minister of Tonga, Vajru, signed a handover certificate of the donation of Y-12 aircraft. The handover ceremony took place in the presence of it over to King Tupou VI at Lupepau'u Airport in Vava'u. The 17-seat aircraft was manufactured in China by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China at a cost of approximately $7.4 million. This was the second aircraft donated to the Government of Tonga by the Chinese Government, the first being an MA60 donated in 2013 (as recorded in Record ID#37733). The total cost of construction for these two planes was $20 million USD. In 2015, it was reported that this plane experienced mechanical issues with the brakes. This plane was at the time operated by Real Tonga Airlines
