Description

In 2006, the Chinese Government and the Government of Mongolia signed a grant agreement for the Buyant Ukhaa Sport Palace Construction Project. China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) reportedly committed RMB 115 million of grant funding to support the project. The purpose of the project was to construct an indoor sport stadium with 5045 seats and a height of 35.85 meters in the 10th khoroo of Ulaanbaatar’s Khan Uul district (exact locational coordinates: 47.854393984505585, 106.78488428086459). The stadium (known as the Buyant Ukhaa Sport Palace or Биеийн тамир спортын ордон) occupies a 4 hectare area and it is adjacent to the Chinggis Khaan International Airport. It can hold volleyball, basketball, badminton, wrestling, judo and other sports competitions. China Foreign Construction Engineering Design Consultant Co., Ltd. (also known as China Sino-Foreign Construction Engineering Design Consultants Co., Ltd.) was responsible for the design of the stadium. Shanghai Construction Group was responsible for its construction (and it was issued a construction contract worth RMB 106.45 million). Construction commenced in May 2008. However, an official groundbreaking ceremony did not take place until June 20, 2008. It was attended by Xi Jinping, who was at the time a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the People’s Republic of China. Construction ended on November 20, 2010. On December 2, 2010, the project was officially completed and handed over to the local authorities. The originally anticipated project completion date was September 20, 2010.
