Project narrative

From November 19-21 2014, during President Xi Jinping's visit to New Zealand, China announced their intention to establish a China Cultural Centre in New Zealand. That month, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the Wellington City Council to establish the center. The center opened on October 19, 2015 in Wellington, and was registered as a non-profit organization (NGO), and on December 11, 2015, it was official opened to the public. The center is intended to strengthen China-New Zealand cultural exchanges and cooperation, and support mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Staff comments

1. AidData has assumed, as China's Ministry of Culture took the prerogative to establish and operate this center, that it provided financing (in the form of a grant).
