Full Description

Project narrative

On December 26, 2022, at the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, Chinese Ambassador Nong Rong handed over a check worth PKR 3.76 million to Dr. Fazal ur Rahman, Director of the Pakistan Institute of China Studies at the University of Sargodha to establish the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship 2023. The donation was intended to fund scholarships to be awarded on both merit and need-based criteria to students enrolled in Chinese language courses, as well as to promote Chinese language and cultural activities at the university. On October 6 2022, an award ceremony was held at the Malik Firoz Khan Noon Business School for the 2023 cohort of the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship at the University of Sargodha. During the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sargodha Dr. Qaiser Abbas distributed scholarships worth PKR 10,000 to 282 students enrolled in Chinese language courses, including 100 students chosen based on merit, and 176 students chosen based on need.

Staff comments

1. AidData has coded the commitment date as the month the Chinese ambassador handed over the funds to the University of Sargodha as a proxy. 2. It is unclear how 6 of the 282 scholarship recipients were chosen, given that 100 were chosen based on merit, and 176 based on need.
