Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In September 2015, President Xi Jinping announced China would commit $2 billion to establish Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund (GDSSCF) to support initiatives in the developing world during United Nation's Global Development Summit. In May 2017, during the One-Belt One-Road Summit, Xi committed an additional $1 billion. On June 28, 2022, CIDCA committed another $1 billion to support poverty alleviation, anti-pandemic, human resources and cooperation, food security, digital connection and sustainable development initiatives. The fund supports China's Global Development Initiative (GDI) supported by the United Nations in 2021. As one of the first projects under the GDI, on November 22, 2022, China announced it would donate 930 tons of rice and 120 tons of canned fish to more than 130,000 students at 1,400-plus primary schools across Laos' eight provinces. While GDSSCF provided the fund, the World Food Programme helps carry out the program.
