Project narrative

On October 6th, 2022, a handover ceremony was held for the "Lighting Up TUC&BTC" project, a China-aid initiative to install solar street lights in the urban areas of South Tarawa, Kiribati's most populous region. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Zhao Jian, Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Mrs. Bwebwe Tuare from the Ministry of Internal Affairs serving as Officer-in-Charge, and the Mayors of Teinainano Urban Council (TUC) and Betio Town Council (BTC). In addition to separate projects illuminating outer islands from Makin to Arorae and the Line Islands with solar lights, this initiative focuses on South Tarawa where nearly half of Kiribati's population resides. A total of 625 solar street lights will be installed across TUC and BTC communities, with 124 lights already brightening areas such as villages, churches, clinics, and schools.
