Project narrative

On August 17, 2022, a welcome ceremony was held at JFK Hospital in Monrovia for China's 15th medical team dispatched to Liberia. The event was attended by the Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, the president of JFK Hospital, and the administrative secretary of the Ministry of Health of Liberia. Following the ceremony, the medical team visited the hospital's facilities. In the first half of 2022, China and Liberia signed a new round of protocols for dispatching Chinese medical teams to Liberia for a five-year period from 2022-2027. The 15th batch of medical aid to Liberia consists of 9 backbone physicians in internal medicine, surgery, maternal and child health, stomatology, cardiology, ultrasound and traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture, and officially started its aid work in early August 2022. During the aid to Liberia, the medical team plans to complete the diagnosis and treatment of 5,000 routine cases, organize 2 free clinics, actively promote the cooperation project between China and Africa counterpart hospitals, donate medical equipment and medicines to Liberia, train medical staff for Liberia, participate in radio programs to promote the medical team, share China's experience in epidemic prevention and control, promote traditional Chinese medicine, and jointly promote Chinese culture with the Confucius Institute of the University of Liberia. According to a speech given by a counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Liberia, while in Liberia, the 15th medical team assisted 7,962 people, by performing 233 surgeries, 47 resuscitations of critically ill patients, 778 visits to the Internal Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture and Moxibustion) Department, 1,186 ultrasound examinations, and 53 training sessions for the 95 trainees at JFK Hospital.
