Project narrative

On September 1, 2022, the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica provided funding for the Summer of Service Scholarship (SOS), which is part of the "I Believe Initiative" of the Governor-General’s Program for Excellence. Chinese Ambassador Chen Daojiang attended the award ceremony and presented scholarships to students. The monetary value of the scholarships is unknown. Through the program, Jamaican students complete community service projects during the summer, with oversight from a committee. In some cases these projects are also supported by sponsors, and the committee can nominate students for prizes and awards. The Chinese Embassy in Jamaica has sponsored the Summer of Service Scholarship (SOS) since 2018. Other sponsors of the scholarship program include Northern Caribbean University, the Jamaican University of Technology, NCB Foundation, Derrimon Trading, First Regional Co-operative Credit Union, GraceKennedy Foundation, Newport-Fersan, Barita Foundation, Alfrasure, Dr. Mark Gonzalez, and the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation.
