On December 1st, 2022, the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica donated educational equipment worth JMD 5,400,000 to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus. The donation supported the Huawei ICT Lab - part of the larger Huawei ICT Talent Hub in Jamaica. Huawei and the UWI had previously signed a joint cooperation MOU in 2021 for the creation of the Huawei ICT Talent Hub in Jamaica, through which Huawei works with the Jamaican Government to build an ICT academy with UWI and UTech. Huawei is to provide the ICT equipment, course resources, and platform resources and offer scholarships to UWI and UTech students worth JMD 4 million each year.
