Full Description

Project narrative

In April 2023, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced the donation of 1.5 grams of lunar samples to the French Government during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to China. The lunar samples, which were transported to the National Museum of Natural History in Paris for further research, are to be used for scientific research. A project to study the samples will be undertaken by the French National Center for Space Studies, the French National Center for Scientific Research, the Paris Institute of Earth Physics, and the University of Paris-Sorbonne over a period of five years. The samples were gathered by China's Chang'e-5 mission in December 2020. A similar donation of lunar samples was given to Russia during President Vladimir Putin's visit to China in February 2022.
