Full Description

Project narrative

On August 31, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica provided funding for the Summer of Service Scholarship (SOS) of the "I Believe Initiative" of the Governor-General’s Program for Excellence. Chinese Ambassador Chen Daojiang attended the award ceremony and presented scholarships to 10 students. Through the program, Jamaican students dedicate their summers to community service projects, for which they submit proposals and are matched with sponsors. The Chinese Embassy in Jamaica has sponsored the Summer of Service Scholarship (SOS) for five consecutive years since 2018, helping outstanding young students from Jamaica to complete their undergraduate studies, assisting the economic and social development of Jamaica, and cultivating more talents for the development of China-Jamaica relations. Other sponsors of the scholarship program include Northern Caribbean University, the Jamaican University of Technology, NCB Foundation, Derrimon Trading, First Regional Co-operative Credit Union, GraceKennedy Foundation, Newport-Fersan, Barita Foundation, Alfrasure, Dr. Mark Gonzalez, and the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation.
