Project narrative

On November 12, 2022, the Chinese Embassy in the Solomon Islands signed an implementation agreement with the National University of the Solomon Islands for the construction of a new student dormitory complex. The agreement was signed by Gong Rui, Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, and Dr. Rodgers, Chairman of the Solomon Islands’ National Organizing Committee for the 2023 Pacific Games. The project aimed to enhance educational infrastructure and improve the working and learning environment at the university. The groundbreaking ceremony took place earlier on June 22, 2022, and construction was completed within 16 months. Jiangsu Provincial Construction Group (JPC) served as the primary contractor, and the China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute (CSADI) was responsible for project management. The facility was officially handed over on October 25, 2023. The dormitory complex was first used to house athletes during the 2023 Pacific Games, held from November 19 to December 2, 2023. After the Games, it was repurposed to serve as permanent student accommodation at the university—the first modern student housing complex of its kind in the country.
