Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In late 2004, the Chinese Government provided a RMB 3 million grant to the Government of Malta as part of a cooperation agreement. The grant was intended to fund the 300,000-Ton Dry Dock and Quay Equipment and Technical Upgrading Project at Malta Drydocks. The funding provided for six air compressors at the site which were given to authorities in Malta and handover certificates were signed on September 20, 2006, marking the completion of the project. China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. and China National Complete Plant Import & Export Corp., Ltd. appear to have helped with the implementation of providing the equipment.

1. The Chinese project title is 干船坞设备. The 300,000-Ton Dry Dock and Quay Construction Project was supported by the Chinese Government through an RMB 100 million interest-free loan. It was implemented by COMPLANT between January 1975 and in September 1980. 800 Chinese technicians, engineers and workers participated in the construction of the dry dock and quay. With a total capacity of 300,000 tons, the so-called “No. 6 dry dock” (or “Red China Dock”) is not only the largest dock in Malta, but also one of the largest in the Mediterranean region. It has become a symbol of Sino-Maltese friendship.
