Project narrative

On July 8, 2019, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the University of Huddersfield signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute of Science and Technology Innovation at the University of Huddersfield. As part of the agreement, Hanban is obligated to provide RMB 150,000 worth of books and teaching materials (Record ID#102224), a start up fund of no more than $150,000 USD for decorations and equipment (Record ID#90556), a set amount of annual funding according to the needs of the institute, and numbers of Chinese instructors. The funds are dispersed through a special or separate account for independent accounting, with the Director and Deputy as joint signatories. The agreement has a 5-year validity and automatically renews at the end of every 5-year term. On July 8, 2019, the University of Huddersfield and East China University of Science and Technology, the cooperating partner, signed a supplementary implementation agreement. East China University of Science and Technology agreed to provide one or two visiting scholars annually, donate teaching materials, and receive student study groups. The Confucius Institute of Science and Technology Innovation at the University of Huddersfield is the 30th Confucius Institute to be established in the UK and the first in the world to focus on Science and Technology Innovation education. While COVID-19 had disrupted the implementation of the institute, construction has is still in progress and ongoing. An unveiling ceremony was expected to occur in February 2022.
