Project narrative

On February 26, 2022, the Chinese Government and the Government of Burundi signed an exchange of letters which committed approximately RMB 390 million of grant funding for the Melchior Ndadaye International Airport Rehabilitation, Extension and Modernization Project. The grant proceeds were drawn from an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) that was previously signed by the parties. The purpose of the project is to rehabilitate, extend, and modernize Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (Burundi's only international airport) in the capital city of Burundi. Shanghai Baoye Group Corp., Ltd. is the contractor responsible for project implementation. A project implementation agreement was signed on October 20, 2023. By June 2024, the project had achieved a 50% completion rate. This project is linked to Record ID#57280.
