Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On March 10, 2023, the Sichuan Provincial Government's 18th Medical Team to Sao Tome and Principe left China to begin their 18-month mission at the Ayres de Menezes Hospital. The team was comprised of eight members from six medical units in the Sichuan Province of China, including West China Hospital at Sichuan University. The 18th Chinese Medical Team was intended to alleviate a shortage of medical professionals and improve the medical facilities in Sao Tome and Principe. The 18th Chinese Medical Team returned to China on September 22, 2024. During their time in Sao Tome and Principe, the 18th Chinese Medical Team continued the work of their predecessors by providing free clinics and fluoride coatings, exploring the applications of acupuncture as an alternative to local anesthetic in dental procedures, and by training local doctors in general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, dentistry and other specialties.
