Project narrative

China and Egypt have donated 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Palestine to boost its fight against the pandemic, the Chinese Embassy to Egypt said in a statement on Feb. 22nd, 2022. The vaccines were locally produced in Egypt through a partnership between Egypt's Holding Company for Biological Products and Vaccines (VACSERA) and Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac, according to Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, Egypt's acting health minister and higher education minister, who attended a ceremony held at VACSERA's headquarters on Feb. 21st to mark the donation. The two countries’ partnership culminated in signing two agreements in April 2021 between VACSERA and the Chinese bioproducts company Sinovac to manufacture the Chinese vaccine in Egypt. This donation was first announced in the framework of talks held by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during the latter’s visit to Egypt in July 2021. Egypt and Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech signed the agreement for production in December 2021.
