Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On, April 21, 2006 Hu Jintao president of the People's Republic of China, donated 567 types of books totaling 1,346 volumes to Yale University. The books included materials on China's politics, economy, history, and culture, the world's largest-circulation reference book "Xinhua Dictionary", China's first large-scale comprehensive encyclopedia "Encyclopedia of China", Chinese historical and cultural classics "The Analects" and "The Book of Rites", and the "Talking about China" series of stories about the history of Chinese civilization, and "Splendid Articles - Traditional Chinese Embroidery Patterns" a photo album on precious Qing Dynasty crane embroidery, and "Ancient Chinese Sculpture", a book published jointly by the Foreign Languages Press of China and Yale University Press, with the Chinese and English versions published in China and the United States respectively. This donation acted as a continuation of a 157 year tradition (as of 2006) of Yale possessing a Chinese book collection, being the first university in the United States to do so.
