Project narrative

On May 16, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Madagascar announced that China would send coaches to Madagascar from June to August of that year. The coaches were sent to train athletes in weightlifting, athletics, table tennis and badminton. The team left Chengdu on July 15 and arrived in Antananarivo on July 16. They had forty days to train the Malagasy athletes. According to the Chinese Embassy in Madagascar, the coaches departed on September 8, 2023. The eight-person team consisted of six coaches from universities across China, and two other personnel. Of these, two were visiting professors from the School of Physical Education of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering and two were graduate students at the university. According to media sources, China Sports International Economic and Technical Cooperation Company helped implement the program. This is part of a three-part project for emergency technical assistance in sports ahead of the 11th Indian Ocean Island Countries Games, to be hosted by Madagascar August 25 to September 3, 2023. The other two parts of the project were a grant of sports equipment to Madagascar in May 2023 (Record ID#103400) and 51 Madagascar coaches and athletes' trip to China for training in February 2023 (Record ID#103416).
