Project narrative

In February 2023, 49 Malagasy coaches and athletes traveled to China for training. According to various media sources, they stayed for four months in two different provinces. Some of the training occurred in Panzhihua, Sichuan province. The athletes and coaches were from four sports: track and field (athletics), weightlifting, badminton, and table tennis. The group included 51 people total: 45 athletes, 4 coaches, and two officials. The track and field and weightlifting teams left first, on February 16. This party included 15 track and field athletes, 14 weightlifters, 2 coaches, and 1 official. There were also nine coaches or athletes each for badminton and table tennis teams. This is part of a three-part project for emergency technical assistance in sports ahead of the 11th Indian Ocean Island Countries Games, to be hosted by Madagascar from August 25 to September 3, 2023. The other two parts of the project were a grant of sports equipment to Madagascar in May 2023 (Record ID#103400) and some Chinese trainers being sent to Madagascar in June and August 2023 (Record ID#103401).
