Project narrative

Prior to 2011, Hanban donated a bust of Confucius to the Chinese Learning Center at Western Kentucky University. The statue serves as a centerpiece in WKU's Confucius Institute. The Confucius Institute was established on February 8, 2010, with the "CI WKU Establishment Agreement." On April 22, 2019, WKU announced that they were closing the Confucius Institute due to their inability to obtain a waiver from the Department of Defense as the result of 2018 legislation prohibiting the operation of a Confucius Institute if the University also receives Department of Defense funding for Chinese language programs.
