Project narrative

On December 5, 2022, a launching ceremony was held in Accra for the Seeing the Beautiful World project sponsored by the 11th Chinese Medical Team to Ghana, the One Heart Foundation, the China Enterprises Chamber of Commerce in Ghana, Beijing United Charity Foundation, China-Ghana Friendship Hospital (LEKMA Hospital), and Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital. The goal of the project was to bolster access to eye care in Ghana by providing fully funded cataracts surgeries for 100 low-income Ghanaians and partially funded minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries for an additional 50. The project was funded by an RMB 90,000 donation from Beijing United Charity Foundation, a GHS 170,000 donation from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Ghana, and a GHS 170,000 donation from the One Heart Foundation. Between December 2022 and March 2023, the 11th Chinese Medical Team to Ghana provided cataracts surgery to more than 30 Ghanaians and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to 17 Ghanaians as part of the project. The Seeing the Beautiful World project was expected to be continued by the 12th Chinese Medical Team to Ghana, who would also train local medical practitioners in optometric procedures.
