Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On April 17, 2023, the 16th Chinese medical team to Eritrea was welcomed to Eritrea and met by Ambassador Cai Ge, major officials of the Eritrean Ministry of Health, and representatives of Chinese-funded institutions at the airport. The new 18-member medical team from Henan Province, China, will work in major Eritrean hospitals for one year, and its members represent specialties such as spinal surgery, imaging, pediatrics, orthopedics, anesthesiology, and ophthalmology. On April 18, 2023, the Ministry of Health of Eritrea and the China Chamber of Commerce in Eritrea hosted welcoming activities for the team, as well as farewell activities for the 15th medical team (see Record ID#101327). At the welcoming activities, Ambassador Cai said that 2023 is the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Ecuador and the 60th anniversary of China's dispatch of medical aid teams abroad. It is greatly significant to the medical and health cooperation between the two sides and the relations between the two countries. Since 1997, nearly 300 medical team members have been sent to Eritrea. Sending medical experts to Eritrea is an important measure for China to implement the China-Africa Cooperation Forum Action Plan, as was outlined on September 3-4 at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. On May 17, 2024, the Chinese Embassy in Eritrea and the Ministry of Health of Eritrea held farewell activities for the 16th medical aid team to Eritrea and a handover ceremony for the 17th team.
