Project narrative

On September 6, 2023, letters of exchange were signed between the Chinese Ambassador to the Bahamas Dai Qingli, and the Bahamas Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Pothier for a $36,000,000 donation to renovate the Bahamas National Stadium (also known as the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium). In December 2024, an implementation agreement was signed between the two governments. The project scope consisted of two phases. The first phase, which was scheduled for completion in May 2024, involved (a) replacing the roof of the Eastern grandstand; (b) upgrading the lighting in the eastern and western canopy; (c) conducting concrete repairs to the columns and beams of the eastern grandstand; (d) repairing seats and handrails to prepare for the World Relays; (e) finishing concrete repairs to the western grandstand; (f) painting external areas of the eastern and western grandstand; and (g) Installing a new track by Mondo America Incorporated to meet World Athletics. The second phase, which was scheduled for implementation between June 2024 and April 2026, involves (a) replacing the roof of the western grandstand; (b) conducting concrete repairs to the columns and beams of the western grandstand; ;(c) indoor and outdoor architectural decoration and renovation; (d) replacement of the fire suppression system; (e) repairs and renovations to the water-supply and drainage systems; (f) replacement of the ventilation, air-conditioning, power supply, and distribution systems; and (g) renovation of the sports ground, including the installation of new seats, jumbotrons, and equipment. SINOCONST, a subsidiary of SINOMACH, a Chinese state-owned enterprise, was the contractor responsible for project implementation. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 8, 2024, and project completion was originally scheduled for 14 days before the World Relays occurred at the stadium on May 5, 2024; however, there were many project implementation delays. The World Relays were held at the stadium, so Phase 1 of the renovation project was apparently completed by May 5, 2024.
