Project narrative
In December 2020, the Chinese Government dispatched the 18th medical team from Zhejiang Province to the Central African Republic. The team was stationed at the Friendship Hospital (Hôpital de l'Amitié), which was built with funding from the Chinese Government during the 1980s, in the capital city of Bangui. The medical team had 11 members, including 9 doctors from departments such as internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, and obstetrics and gynecology. As of May 2022, the medical team provided 20,874 outpatient visits, performed 383 surgeries, conducted 2,611 auxiliary examinations, promoted traditional Chinese medicine twice, provided COVID-19 knowledge training to local doctors five times, and donated epidemic prevention materials once. The medical team also helped the Friendship Hospital develop anesthesia, trained anesthesia experts, and established a pain clinic. The team completed its service and returned to China in July 2022. The Chinese Government has sent medical teams to Central African Republic every two years since 1978 (except for a 7-year pause for political reasons).
