Project narrative

On June 29, 2023, the Government of Mauritius received a donation of 720 national flags of the Republic of Mauritius from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Port Louis. This in-kind donation was made in celebration of two national milestones: the 55th anniversary of Mauritius’ independence and the 31st anniversary of the country’s transition to a republic. The flag handover ceremony was attended by senior Mauritian officials and representatives of the Chinese diplomatic mission. During the event, a representative of the Mauritian government publicly expressed appreciation to the Government of China and the Chinese Embassy for the symbolic gesture, noting that the flags would be used in official commemorative events across the country and contribute to national unity and identity-building efforts. The donation is part of China’s broader diplomatic engagement and soft power outreach strategy in Mauritius, reflecting strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
