Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On February 7, 2023, the Chinese ambassador to Cape Verde, Xu Jie, and the Cabo Verdean Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Miryan Vieira, signed an agreement for China to provide RMB 10 million of emergency food aid to Cabo Verde. On September 4, 2023, the Chinese ambassador officially handed over the donated food supplies on behalf of the Chinese Government; it was delivered in the form of 1,042 tons of rice. The donation was part of China’s response to an appeal from the Cabo Verdean Government, which had declared a “social and economic emergency” due to overlapping crises, including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a prolonged drought, and the global inflationary pressure exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. Ambassador Xu Jie expressed confidence that Cabo Verde would overcome this period of hardship and noted that the aid reflects China’s commitment to supporting its development partners in times of crisis.
