Project narrative
In March 2023, the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) commissioned the Foreign Economic Cooperation Business Department of the China International Engineering Consulting Corporation (CIECC) to conduct a feasibility study for the Greater Banjul Area Power Boosting Project (冈比亚班珠尔大区电力提升项目). The project, which had seen little progress over a seven-year period, aims to modernize outdated transmission lines, improve grid reliability, and expand electricity access to underserved communities. From May 28 to June 11, 2023, a CIECC project team conducted 10 field inspections and held 10 technical seminars in collaboration with the Gambian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. During the mission, the team jointly signed the “Implementation Scope and Main Technical Specifications of the Power Boosting Project in the Greater Banjul Area” with Gambian officials, outlining key infrastructure priorities and technical requirements. On September 22, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Gambia and the Gambian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy signed the “Memorandum of Meeting on the Feasibility Study of the Greater Banjul Power Boosting Project,” with support from CIECC.
