Full Description

Project narrative

On May 24, 2023, the Chinese Ambassador to Burundi delivered donations of food, stationery, and other supplies to two Missionaries of Charity centers in Rohero (Mukaza commune, Bujumbura City) and Kajaga (Mutimbuzi commune, Bujumbura province). The event was part of the “Warm Children’s Hearts” program, initiated by China’s First Lady Peng Liyuan and implemented jointly with the Good Deeds Mugiraneza Foundation of Burundi’s First Lady. The donation targeted orphans and children with disabilities, aiming to alleviate malnutrition. The 21st Chinese medical team also provided free on-site clinics (linked to Record ID#102386). The total value of the donation was not disclosed.

Staff comments

1. The centers are sometimes called "Calcutta Missionary Center" since the Missionaries of Charity were formed in Calcutta. The one in Kajaga is sometimes titled "Congoman Hotel." 2. Donation coded as Representational due to primarily symbolic and soft-power nature.
