Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On March 8, 2023, the Chinese government officially handed over 93 sets of road and airport construction equipment to Cuba in a ceremony held at the headquarters of ECOING 5 Construction Company on the outskirts of Havana. This donation had been shipped in October 2022 and included: 25 vibratory compactors, 25 dump trucks, 26 generator sets with lighting towers, 6 front loaders, Backhoe loaders, wheeled loaders, asphalt pavers, and other machinery. The equipment was destined to support runway repairs at 16 airports across several Cuban provinces—Havana, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, Holguín, and Santiago de Cuba—as well as broader road infrastructure work. The donation was made by an unspecified Chinese government institution and is part of China’s long-term support for Cuba’s development needs.

Staff comments

1. While the equipment shipment occurred in October 2022, all verified sources — including official MFA and MINCEX statements — clearly state that the handover ceremony and official commitment of the aid happened on March 8, 2023.
