Project narrative
Between January and March 2023, several provincial water and sanitation agencies in Cuba received specialized equipment from the Chinese Government. These donations were part of a nationwide effort to enhance Cuba’s water distribution and sanitation capabilities, particularly in regions facing acute infrastructure needs. On January 13, 2023, Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Santiago (Water and Sewer Company of Santiago) received equipment. On January 27, 2023, Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Holguín (Holagua) received at least 11 vehicles, including 6 trucks of three types—water tankers, sewer cleaning trucks, and unclogging trucks. Two trucks were designated for Cueto and Frank País municipalities. On February 10, Ciego de Ávila’s water company received 5 vehicles, including tanker trucks and high-pressure sewer cleaning equipment. On March 13, Hidrored (serving Camagüey and Morón) received a similar shipment. The total value of the donation across provinces was approximately $20 million, per official and media reports.
