On June 2, 2023, the 24th Chinese medical team donated a batch of medical supplies to the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Freetown, the country's capital, to help boost its medical service. The donation would serve to enhance the hospital's capacity for diagnoses and treatment. The materials donated include various categories such as pharmaceuticals, consumables, instruments and equipment, with the monetary value amounting to nearly RMB 300,000 or over 1 million new leones. The donation was made to commemorate the 60th anniversary of China's first medical team dispatched to Africa and the 50th anniversary of China's first medical team dispatched to Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and the hospital director expressed their gratitude to China for its assistance. China has sent medical teams to Sierra Leone since 1973. Over the past 50 years, a total of 24 batches of 363 medical team members have been sent to treat local patients and train local medical personnel. The 24th medical team consisted of 21 members, spanning multiple disciplines including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and pediatrics.
