Project narrative

On December 14, 2023, the Chinese Government officially handed over 70 Maxus D90 SUVs to the Government of Uganda during a ceremony at the Ministry of Works headquarters in Kampala. This donation aims to support Uganda's preparations for hosting the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and the 3rd South Summit, scheduled for January 2024. The handover ceremony was attended by Zhang Lizhong, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, and Musa Ecweru, Uganda's State Minister for Works and Transport. Ambassador Zhang emphasized China's commitment to supporting Uganda's role in regional and international affairs, highlighting that this donation exemplifies China's unwavering support. This donation follows a previous contribution of 70 vehicles by China in 2020 (#92950), intended for the then-scheduled 3rd South Summit, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the current cooperative arrangement: The Chinese Government donated 70 vehicles and covered all costs associated with their shipment and transportation to Kampala. The Ugandan Government assumed responsibility for all customs-related charges and taxes. The Ugandan Government committed to purchasing an additional 30 vehicles, covering all costs related to their procurement and transportation. These summits are significant diplomatic events, with delegates expected from 120 countries for the NAM Summit and 134 countries for the South Summit. The donation of these vehicles is part of China's broader support for Uganda's efforts to host these international gatherings successfully.
