Project narrative

On July 20, 2023, the municipality of Montevideo signed an agreement to accept a donation of a 2-piece sculpture worth RMB 12 million from the National Art Museum of China [Escultura china en Parque Batlle]. The sculpture was inaugurated on May 29, 2024, in Parque Batlle, Montevideo, Uruguay. The sculpture is titled "In Search of Wisdom: Confucius asking Lao Tse about the Tao." This work of art was produced by Wu Weishan, a commended Chinese artist who also serves as the director of the National Art Museum of China. Each piece of the sculpture is 7.8 meters tall, 1.8m wide, and 1.8m long. In total the pieces weigh 6.6 tons. Montevideo's municipal government states "This donation strengthens the friendship between the peoples of China and Uruguay, further deepening artistic exchanges and dialogue between the two countries" [Escultura china en Parque Batlle].
