Project narrative

On April 14, 2021, a handover ceremony was held for a batch of medical supplies valued at USD 86,300 donated by the Chinese Government to Ayres de Menezes Hospital in Sao Tome and Principe. The donation was handed over by members of a Chinese medical team as they began a three-year mission to support Ayres de Menezes Hospital. The donation was intended to address shortages in medical equipment and consumables at Ayres de Menezes Hospital in order to improve the facility's diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

Staff comments

1. Sources conflict on the arrival times of Chinese medical teams to Sao Tome and Principe. Some sources state that a team arrived in early April 2021 and provided medical supplies to Ayres de Menezes Hospital at the start of their three-year mission in the country (https://forumchinaplp.org.mo/zh-hans/economic_trade/view/4270), while other sources state that a team arrived in September 2021 for an 18-month mission and do not mention a donation of medical supplies prior to their arrival (https://news.qq.com/rain/a/20210918A08FXP00). AidData has chosen to code the project based on the available information, but has refrained from linking the project to any of the Chinese medical teams present in Sao Tome and Principe in 2021. 2. Notably, an agreement to continue dispatching Chinese medical teams to Sao Tome and Principe was signed on March 29, 2021, although it is unclear whether this agreement is related to the donation (https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/web/gjhdq_676201/gj_676203/fz_677316/1206_678452/1206x2_678472/202103/t20210330_9182575.shtml).
