Project narrative

On November 1, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Kiribati donated a batch of sports gear to the Ministry of Women, Youth, Sports, and Social Affairs (MWYSSA) in support of the 2023 Te Runga National Games. The donated equipment included table tennis and badminton equipment. The monetary value of this donation is unknown. MWYSSA Minister Martin Moreti thanked the Chinese government, highlighting that the donation would greatly benefit athletes and contribute to the smooth execution of Te Runga 2023. During the handover ceremony, the Embassy also provided an AUD 250,000 cash grant to MWYSSA to support the organization and implementation of Te Runga 2023 (see Record ID#104167). The Te Runga National Championship Games is a multi-sport event held every two years, featuring various athletic competitions, including the Kiribati National Championship football tournament. Since reestablishing diplomatic ties with Kiribati in 2019, China has consistently sponsored the event.
