Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2019, the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University and Mittaphab Hospital in Vientiane signed a cooperation agreement focused on the treatment of thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder. Under this agreement, the Health Commission of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region dispatched a medical team to Mittaphab Hospital to provide specialized treatment and training support. By 2022, the Chinese medical team was actively working in Vientiane, where they treated approximately 300 Lao patients with thalassemia. In addition to providing direct medical care, the team worked alongside Lao doctors to transfer knowledge and skills, with the aim of strengthening Mittaphab Hospital’s long-term treatment capacity. Reports confirm that the team continued its work at the hospital throughout 2023, offering both patient treatment and professional training for local staff.

Staff comments

1. It is unclear when the medical team was first sent to Laos, although sources referenced the team's work in 2022 and their continued presence at the hospital in 2023.
