Project narrative

On August 22, 2023, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced China had pledged ZAR 167 million worth of emergency power equipment during the BRICS summit in South Africa. The donation pledge was accompanied by a ZAR 500 million grant for energy development assistance, captured in record ID #107622. The first batch of equipment was received on November 30th, 2023, and included 450 gasoline generators. The total donation was to include 552 generators ranging from 6kw up to 200kw. The generators were to serve as backup electricity for public buildings including clinics, schools and courts. The second batch, received in August 2024, consisted of 39 diesel generator sets, 35 100kWh off-grid Photovoltaic systems, as well as 25 200kWh off-grid Photovoltaic systems.
