Project narrative

On May 29, 2023, a farewell ceremony for the 6th Chinese military medical expert team to Sierra Leone was jointly held by the Chinese Embassy and Sierra Leone Ministry of Defense. Chinese Ambassador Wang Qing, Sierra Leone's Deputy Minister of Defense Muana Massaquoi, and Sierra Leone's Chief of Defense Staff Patrick Lavahun were among those who attended the ceremony. During their term, the 6th team was based at the Tropical Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Center (IDPC) in the 34 Military Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. In 2015, the Chinese military sent the first military medical team to Sierra Leone to help the country's response to the Ebola outbreak. The military medical teams have since been sent to Sierra Leone every year. Moreover, the military medical teams are distinct from the medical teams that have been dispatched from Hunan Province since 1973.

Staff comments

1. The date on which the military medical team arrived in Sierra Leone is unknown, however like the teams that came before them they likely arrived sometime in July and served a year-long term. Thus, AidData has coded the commitment date as being in July 2022.
