Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On April 14, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Guyana and the Ministry of Health of Guyana signed an a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to launch a specialist medical training program for Guyanese doctors. The program has been implemented by the 18th and 19th Chinese Medical teams to Guyana and focuses on improving tertiary healthcare capacity through clinical instruction in advanced procedures and complex surgeries. Prior to the MOU signing, a cohort of 13 Guyanese doctors had already been enrolled in the six-month training program, facilitated by the 18th Chinese Medical Team, and graduated on August 22, 2023 (see Record ID#100023). The 19th Chinese Medical Team continued the program and oversaw the graduation of a third cohort of resident doctors in September 2024 (see Record ID#104009). The training is taking place at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and Linden Hospital Complex—two facilities where the Chinese Medical teams have historically operated. The goal of the program is to expand access to specialized care, improve patient outcomes, and support Guyana’s broader goal of becoming a regional leader in healthcare. Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony also announced plans to expand the training framework further, including postgraduate study opportunities for Guyanese doctors in China.
