Project narrative

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period. The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN. The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund. Approved in 2016 and implemented between July 2017 to June 2021, USD $1,940,017 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to strengthen the analytical capacities among policy-makers of several countries along the Belt and Road in assessing the effects of the Belt and Road Initiative under the guide of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) helped implement this project. The project aims to help policy-makers formulate policies to maximize the Initiative's benefits while managing potential environmental risks. The capacity development project consists of four components: (1) training and institutional networking of policymakers, (2) broad policy dialogues, (3) joint research and policy analysis, (3) broad policy dialogues, and (4) publication and dissemination. As part of the project, the UN DESA developed a user-friendly assessment modeling tool that will be used by policy-makers to help formulate policies and budget proposals. The project included the countries of Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mongolia, Myanmar, Romania, Serbia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Partners involved included UNESCAP, UNESCWA, ECA, ECE, UNDP, UNCTAD, WTO, ITC, UNIDO, State Information Center of China.
