Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period. The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN. The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund. Approved in 2023 by UNPDF, a $795,699 grant under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund was allocated for a project to enhance business matchmaking and capacity building opportunities for micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) of Lao People’s Democratic Republic in China and peer learning between Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Thailand. It will contribute to inclusive and sustainable economic growth, mitigate vulnerability (especially for women), and create jobs by enhancing MSMEs’ export competitiveness to China. Under the Lao People’s Democratic Republic-China Railway and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) framework, this project will also analyze the trade impact of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic-China railway and trade facilitation measures to Thailand, as well as export potential of Thailand to China. The project is scheduled to run between June 2024 - May 2026. The funding is being outsourced from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). UNDESA and the International Trade Centre (a multilateral agency with a joint mandate through UN and WTO), signed this project on May 23, 2024. Implementers include: International Trade Centre, ASEAN-China Centre, Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), Ministry of Commerce of China, Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Department of Trade Promotion and Product Development of Lao PDR, SME Finance Forum, and Alibaba Group.
