Project narrative

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period. The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN. The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund. Approved in 2023 by UNPDF, a $768,600 grant under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund was allocated for a project to promote sustainable and climate-smart agriculture through innovative agricultural machinery in support of related SDGs, specifically by addressing the surplus of crop straw primarily managed through burning, which poses environmental and health risks. This project builds upon Phase 2 of China-ESCAP Cooperation's Project on Integrated Straw Management from 2021-2023 in China and Vietnam, and was recognized by the UN South-South-Cooperation Office in 2022 as "one of the best practices in South-South and triangular cooperation." In 2024, pilot projects for Phase II were launched in Cambodia, Indonesia, and Nepal. UNPDF's funding will build upon Phase II and establish new pilot sites within Cambodia, Indonesia, and Nepal to adapt and scale up mechanization-based solutions to address crop straw burning while providing follow-up technical and outreach support to the existing pilots through study tours. The project's duration is between April 2024-March 2028 with UNESCAP as the implementing entity. Collaborating partners include FAO, RCOs, and national governments.
