Narrative

Project narrative

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute USD $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period. The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN. The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund. Approved in 2018 and implemented between November 2018 and April 2022, USD $948,307 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to improve investment, trade, finance/debt, and technology development infrastructure in Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) implemented the project, along with collaborating partners UNIDO, UNESCAP, UNECA, UNDP, CIKD, and DRCSC. Based on the understanding of Chinese development framework, the project conducted the dissemination of successful policy experiences of other developing countries to the chosen pilot countries. The project also benefited the countries of South Africa, Malaysia and Pakistan. The project organized 5 global conferences in 2019 and 2022 and 9 webinars from 2020-2022, reaching over 200 participants. The project also established the UNCTAD BRI Platform.
