Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On June 1, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in The Gambia and the 6th Chinese Medical Aid Team donated medicine, hygiene kits, school supplies, sports equipment, and food items in "love" schoolbags to the Bakoteh Shelter for Children and Home for the Elderly (also known as SOS Children’s Village Bakoteh) in Serrekunda, Kanifing Municipality. The donation took place during the “China-Africa Hand in Hand, Warming Children’s Hearts” event held in celebration of International Children’s Day. Chinese Ambassador Liu Jin and Gambian First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow attended the ceremony, alongside staff from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare. The donation was intended to support the education and well-being of vulnerable children residing at the shelter. The monetary value of the donation is unknown. As part of the same outreach event, the 6th Chinese (Liaoning) Medical Aid Team provided free medical screenings to more than 50 children, including health education and follow-up plans for children identified with congenital heart conditions (see linked record ID #103854).
