On December 21, 2015, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) issued a $1,700,000 USD grant to the University of Kentucky for the renovation of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky as part of its designation as a "Model Confucius Institute". The designation was in recognition of success of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky, which won Confucius Institute of the Year twice in 2012 and 2014. The Model Confucius Institute would be located on the ground floor of the Lucille C. Caudill Little Fine Arts Library on the campus in Lexington, Kentucky with a total area usable in excess of 1000 square meters, with 747 square meters to be renovated to make corridors and exteriors for the Confucius Institute. It would also include offices, meeting space, several classrooms including specific ones for traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy and a high-tech classroom, a gallery, and other display space. The University of Kentucky committed to make the Lucille Little Library the home of Model Confucius Institute for at least 25 years. The entire renovation would cost $5,600,000 USD, with the University of Kentucky agreeing to expend institutional resources, commit real estate, and/or direct other private gifts worth $3,900,000 USD to renovate the space. Kentucky's Board of Trustees accepted the gift in December 2015 and it was disbursed on February 9, 2016. In September 2017, an inauguration ceremony was held to mark the completion of the project. The original grant in 2010 for the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky is captured by Record ID#44093.
