Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period. The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN. The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund. In 2017, $2,291,940 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund was dedicated to encouraging sustainable farming in developing countries. The project was implemented in May 2017 and was completed in June 2021. It focused on providing governments of developing countries with the tools for supporting sustainable agriculture - specifically Juncao technology - in order to decrease poverty and hunger. This project was directly implemented in Central African Republic, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Madagascar, Myanmar, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania. In addition to supplying governments with these capacities, this project also established a workshop about governmental support for sustainable agriculture. The workshop occurred in Nadi, Fiji on June 4 to June 5, 2018 and was aimed at teaching Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) policymakers how to encourage Juncao technology in their countries. UNDESA helped implement the project, with FAO, UNEP, UNDP, and regional UN commissions also serving as collaborators.
